I met one of the Hatfields one time. A very interesting character. Intelligent but hill country at the same time. A pilot for Delta!

As to your comments, I think this is perhaps my fault. I should have put in a disclaimer that this is not how I see the world working so much as how I see the ... hmm, how to say this? ... I think humans acting outside the scope of gangs form social bonds and arrangements along these concepts. When you form gangs then the dynamics change.

Butler Shaffer pointed to a book a while back called Law for the Elephant. It's an amazing study of the documents derived from the travelers along the Oregon Trail, and how they intereacted, in their own words from their diaries and letters to loved ones. There was a supreme conception of individual rights and responsibilities and the obligations to be fair, no matter what the circumstances. It's a fascinating read, if you get the chance. I think it's a cultural thing, to a certain extent, and one which our culture seems to have lost at present, to a large extent, but one that "we" had at that time, in that place.

Of course I also must recognize that forming gangs is also a very human (and dog) thing to do.

I just see that the notion of claiming property is often more divisive than helpful. It is the unilateral CLAIM part of it that tends to set people's hackles up. There is a great difference between respectfully requesting and making a claim you intend to back up with violence.
